President Donald Trump has rejected a temporary halt to ICE traffic stops, despite the agency’s brief pause following two immigration enforcement operations in which a Colombian immigrant in Maine and a Mexican citizen in Texas were killed.
The president’s position comes as criticism of ICE procedures continues to grow and calls increase for an independent investigation into the agency’s use of force during these operations.
Trump Defends ICE Traffic Stops as a Crime-Fighting Tool
In a post on Truth Social, Trump defended immigration officers and argued that traffic stops remain one of the agency’s most effective tools for combating crime.
The president described ICE’s work as «excellent» and said its officers play a vital role in protecting public safety.
He also blamed former President Joe Biden’s administration for allowing millions of people to enter the United States without adequate screening.
«Many were criminals, and we must remove them. To do that, we have to be strong, firm, and smart, and we cannot give up one of ICE’s most important and effective crime-fighting tools: traffic stops! If we do, we will be playing right into the hands of criminals.»
Trump also criticized Democrats, claiming that eliminating these operations would benefit those he says are trying to weaken the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
According to the president, «radical left Democrats» want to eliminate traffic stops, but he insisted that would not happen under his administration.
Trump Urges the Agency to Continue Operations Despite Temporary Pause
In the same message, Trump voiced his support for ICE officers and encouraged them to continue carrying out their duties while following established procedures.
«ICE, be careful, fair, and smart, and get back to doing your very important job. Keep delivering those great results in the fight against crime! Remember that you are appreciated and respected in the United States.»
His comments came just one day after reports emerged that ICE had suspended, until further notice, most traffic stops and vehicle enforcement actions.
The decision followed an operation in Biddeford, Maine, where a Colombian immigrant was fatally shot by an ICE agent while inside his vehicle.
According to the article, Maine Senator Andy King said that Markwayne Mullin, identified in the report as the Secretary of Homeland Security, told him the agent opened fire after the driver allegedly attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon against officers.
The article also notes that ICE cited a similar justification in January, when an agent shot Renée Good, a U.S. citizen, during a comparable incident in Minnesota.
Fatal Incidents in Maine and Texas Renew Debate Over ICE Procedures
The Maine case was not the only incident that drew criticism of the immigration agency.
Days earlier, during another enforcement operation in Texas, a Mexican citizen was also fatally shot by an ICE agent while inside his vehicle.
Both incidents have intensified public scrutiny of ICE’s enforcement tactics.
Various organizations and public officials have called for an independent investigation to determine whether the use of force in both cases was justified.
Meanwhile, White House Border Czar Tom Homan sought to clarify the agency’s decision.
Homan said the suspension of ICE traffic stops represents only «a brief pause» and does not signal any change in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy.
He added that ICE officers will continue conducting enforcement operations through other methods while the agency reviews these procedures.
The administration continues to prioritize stronger immigration enforcement—one of President Trump’s central campaign promises—even as the recent deaths place ICE’s operational tactics under renewed scrutiny.
